Restoration Ecology

Ecosdyn differs from other consulting companies in that our approach to restoration ecology does more than take into account the restoration of degraded, derelict or fragmented ecosystems.  One of our goals in ecological restoration is to return a community, as well as an ecosystem, to a condition similar in socioecological structure and function to that existing prior to disturbance.

Our extensive study of human culture and socio-environmental interaction allows us to address human needs on a basic level.  We aim to restore or regenerate this pre-existing interaction or, in some cases, to help a community adapt to irreparable disturbances or degradation.

The basic framework for restorative ecology addresses two facets: basis of design (desired species composition and density) and monitoring plan (setting milestones and success criteria for restoration projects).  We define a wide range of restoration objectives such as restoring high levels of diversity and/or productivity, restoring a habitat so that it is again suitable for target species, restoring aesthetic qualities or recreational opportunities as well as restoring historic ecosystems.

Our approach also integrates socio-ecological restoration by looking at the framework of community sustainability and resource management on a local level.
